After retiring in 1997, he designed and built the family home where his father had built a cabin in 1953 on Ten Mile Lake. He served 12 years on the Westside school board and worked with the Omaha Police Foundation, The Omaha Sports Hall of Fame, the Great Plains Amateur Boxing board and many other civic organizations. Unfortunately, the letter was two weeks late, and he was given two days to report to Illinois.
